Historically, Marshall Islands can be traced as far back as the 2nd millennium BC, when its people were known as sea travelers. The flag of the Marshall Islands features a navy blue field, with two diagonal stripes of orange and white, originating from the lower left corner. A white star with four large rays and 20 small rays, sits on the hoist side, above the two stripes. The stripes are symbolic of the two parallel island chains within the Marshalls – the Rotok and Ralik islands. The blue field represents the surrounding Pacific Ocean, and the white star has a point for each of the 24 districts.
