What is the meaning of a military shadow box? What is a shadow box used for?

Originally started in the United States Navy, a military shadow box was created for good luck. It was thought that if a retiring Naval officer's shadow had touched the ground before them, this would bode as bad luck for that person. To counteract this, a box would be made to hold past accomplishments and accolades, a metaphorical, "shadow," of this person. The Naval officer could then walk ashore for the last time and be handed their shadow box not long after. 

As the name implies, a shadow box is used to house the shadow of one's former self in the military. This is usually in the form of patches, medals and other accomplishments earned during service. Flags, insignia, certificates and picture may also be seen in a shadow box. 

What goes or should be in a military shadow box?

Most military shadow boxes will have a spot made for a folded flag as well as enough space for medals, patches and other important artifacts a military service man or woman had earned through their career. As for what should be in a military shadow box, this customization is going to be up to the individual.
